Avalon Awarded Grant from CMHC to build third Discovery House

February 13, 2007 – Avalon Master Builder and Avalon Central Alberta, in partnership, have been selected as winners of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) Equilibrium sustainable housing competition to help us build our 3rd Discovery House.

Avalon is a pioneer in eco-smart building and has made a commitment to build a demonstration house every year to test the most current practices in environmentally sustainable and energy efficient home building technologies. In 2006, Avalon’s 2nd Discovery Home, combined state of the art energy efficient construction techniques and equipment with renewable solar energy to provide energy for use in this home. This was Avalon’s first NET-ZERO power home.

Avalon’s 3rd Discovery Home will take it another step further: Discovery 3 House will produce as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis. The home will feature an advanced grey water recycling system to reduce reliance on the municipal water system. An innovative wall and window system will further reduce overall power consumption while making the home more comfortable both summer and winter. Our Discovery 3 House will serve as a blueprint for future energy efficient construction.

Our vision is to build 100% of our homes as net-zero by the year 2015 at no additional cost to consumers.
